There will be times when you are lost but can’t tell anyone or show it to your team, knowing that there is nothing left to do but wait without panicking. This takes courage and is stressful. You need to make sure you look after yourself first. This isn’t a selfish gesture, it’s about making sure you are OK to look after everyone else.
You have to look after yourself first.
I am a workaholic, I admitted that a long time ago but I have a lust for life that is at least equal to my love of work. The way I live my life would not suit everyone. My work and life are welded together in so many fundamental ways but it enables me to do all the things I want, keeps me happy, fresh and with loads to share with the people I work with. No-one wants to be led by the person who has nothing to talk about but work, how uninspiring is that. There is no magic formulae; find a way that allows you to fit a bit of everything in.
It is about you
Being a leader means that in some situations and on some days you stand alone. You ultimately carry the responsibility, the buck stops with you, good and bad. You might be responsible for people's jobs, promotions and futures within the business.

Be self-aware of your own limits, triggers and touch points. You are only human and sometimes you are going to have a bad day and the chances are, others will feel it. If you know it’s happening you can diffuse the situation and also relieve some tension by sharing it and laughing about it.
Leaders need support structures. If you have the backing of a clear decision making process this will be a huge support. You need to know who is there to underpin the painful or complex decisions, and allow you to check decisions that have to be made when things are uncertain. Remember that no matter how important you are, you still play only a part in a much larger picture.
Finding a coach is a real bonus. A trusted coach can be that sounding board where you test and develop your thinking. They can also be the reality check you will need when you are going down the wrong rabbit hole and need someone to shine a light on the way out.
All work and no play makes you boring and narrow minded. You need to experience life to lead people and finding the time and space to do that is as important as the work. You are also the example either people will follow or will get stressed about because they can’t follow.
To understand what your process might be you can buy the book or book a free chemistry session with Nina.
